Local Historic Landmark Evanston, IL
Reviving an Evanston treasure
This historic Tudor at Evanston’s lakefront was carefully restored to its former splendor. Conceived as a bed and breakfast welcoming weary travelers, this project negotiated the design of period-authentic spaces, and the client’s commitment to sustainability: beneath sheared yew hedges, colorful flower beds, and lawn, a voluminous gray-water system captures stormwater, relieves municipal sewers, and Lake Michigan, while keeping the yard irrigated. A fireplace, the peaceful murmur of a water fountain, and pristine bluestone patios create a sense of intimacy and offer shelter from Sheridan Road and the beaches. A bespoke metal overthrow completed with a lantern mounted on stone piers evokes a different time.
