Restoring Chicagoland Lawns this Spring with an Organic Program
Bring your lawn back to life this spring! It's the perfect time to rejuvenate your lawn after a tough winter.
For restoring lawns, the best natural defense against weeds is dense, thick turf. Even in the healthiest lawns, grass dies each winter. This is especially true in colder climates like Illinois. Overseeding is a great tool for creating and maintaining a lush lawn.
We recommend adding new grass seed to an established lawn every year, in the spring or fall, with our sustainable blend of grass seed. This custom blend, made of primarily tall fescue, creates a dense root system that retains water and protects your grass against drought, disease, weed germination, and tough Midwest summer heat.

Chicagoland Overseeding Services
We begin our overseeding service by using a rake to remove all dead grass and twigs. This ensures good contact between the soil and new seed. Then, we spread our custom blend of high-quality sustainable grass seed and apply the Greenwise organic seed starter to promote germination and establish strong roots. Before we leave, we spread a half-inch layer of peat moss over the seed to protect it and keep it moist.

Slice Seeding in the Chicagoland Area
The most effective way to seed your lawn and increase turf density is through slice seeding. We use a machine called a slice seeder to cut vertically through your turf and into the soil, which drops seeds at the same time. This seed-to-soil contact helps the seed germinate, resulting in a faster and much higher germination rate than overseeding.
Turf Aeration & Soil Care
Adding air to your soil—or aerating—each year is one of the best things you can do for your lawn. We offer both Microbial (granular) and Mechanical (core) aeration services.
Aeration breaks through a thatch layer, allows roots to breathe, and makes it easier for water and nutrients to penetrate the soil. This is especially true when combined with our Greenwise PRIME Organic Soil Builder. PRIME is a calcium-based product that breaks up heavy clay soils and gives roots breathing room to grow. Aeration also combines well with seeding.
Spring Prime Organic Soil Builder: Applying PRIME to your lawn adds trace minerals and key nutrients, conserves water, prevents nutrient leaching, and creates optimal soil conditions for lawns.
Spring/Fall Aeration Plus Prime Soil Builder: Aeration with PRIME creates pore space in the soil and infuses a mineral blend crafted to balance and support soil fertility. This effectively breaks up clay soil, reduces density and compaction and adds essential minerals to your soil to create the structure for optimal root growth and turf density.
Spring/Fall Aeration: Greenwise uses two types of aeration: microbial and mechanical (core-aeration) for several reasons, primarily to amend soil compaction and promote root density. Aeration opens the soil to provide needed oxygen for root systems to thrive.
Spring is the best time to do microbial aeration because it doesn't pull up dormant weed seeds and is cleaner in the muddy spring season (no plugs are pulled up). Microbial aeration also promotes nutrient cycling and availability, which makes our lawn fertilization services even more effective.
Fall tends to be the best time for mechanical or core aeration because it creates better seed to soil contact, which enhances our fall seeding services.
If you have really compacted soil or poor quality soil, we can combine both mechanical and microbial aeration.
We are often asked to install sod for clients. We go way beyond simply installing sod. We take several steps to ensure it's done right and that you'll enjoy your new turf for years to come. Here's our step-by-step process:
- We analyze the area to be sodded for any issues, such as poor drainage.
- When we remove the old sod, we always check the grading and re-grade the soil when necessary.
- We’ll check the quality of the topsoil and add more topsoil or compost and rototill it to cultivate the soil and activate the nutrients.
- The type of sod we choose depends on how much sun your turf gets.
- After installing, we use a sod roller to “activate” rooting with the existing soil surface.
- Our last step always includes adding our organic fertilizer to boost the sod and ensure a healthy start.
