Winnetka Heat Already Ranked Your Fall Punch List

Walk a North Shore yard now, while heat still shows what failed.

By the time leaves drop, dry arcs green up and wet corners freeze. You lose the ranking. A Winnetka or Glenview lot needs a fall order before aeration windows and plant sales close.

Score water, turf, and beds from this season

Start with the lawn. Where did the organic program look weak because water never landed? Where did clay stay soggy after storms? Those notes drive coverage repairs, aeration, and any drainage that should happen before freeze.

Then score parkway wear, dog paths, and guest parking strips. Thin bands that return every August belong on fall seeding, not on another summer feed. See organic seeding when density is the real gap.

Put fall work in a sequence the crew can run

Irrigation repairs belong before winterization. Aeration and seeding belong while soil is still warm. Seasonal cleanups should follow, not replace, those jobs.

New hardscape is not a fall add-on if it disturbs finished turf. Put it on a spring design and installation line unless the site is already open. Snow storage belongs on the same sketch. A new parkway bed on last year's pile will fail. Coordinate with snow removal before you plant the curb.

Keep maintenance and construction on two lists

Mowing height, weed timing, and bed edge work are maintenance. A new patio is construction. Mixing them into one "fall cleanup" is how nothing gets a date.

Full service maintenance can carry the keepers. Design should own anything that changes grade or plant layout. Write that split down so the next visit is not a debate at the curb.
