North Shore Landscape Lights Need a Path the Crew Can Reach

North Shore landscape lights fail when the crew cannot reach the transformer.

Wilmette and Winnetka beds fill with hydrangeas and boxwood by late summer. Path fixtures disappear. The box ends up behind a foundation planting. Relamping then starts with a prune, not a bulb.

Keep a walking strip to the box

Mark the transformer on a simple sketch. Leave enough room for a technician with a meter. Two feet of open mulch or turf is usually enough. A pretty wall of shrubs with no gap means night repairs take twice as long.

Historic lots in Wilmette and Glenview hide hardware under mature yews. Cut a service notch. Do not wait until a whole run is dark during a guest weekend.

Garden bed maintenance should list which plants must stay short in front of the box. That note belongs in the property file, not in one person's memory.

Path lights belong at the edge, not in the shrub mass

Put fixtures on the walk edge or on stakes that can be reset after mulch. A lamp dropped into the middle of a perennial mass will be gone by next July. Aim after the prune, not before the plants leaf out.

If a new planting is coming through planting and garden installation, leave sleeves and a beam path. Do not plant a screen that closes the only night route to the side gate.

Walk the real route after dark: parkway to stoop, side gate to garage, patio steps. Accent trees can wait. Dark steps cannot.

Snow, salt, and parkway beds bury hardware

Parkway plantings and plow piles hide low path lights. Keep the transformer off the snow line and out of the downspout splash. Snow removal and lighting share the same front walk on most North Shore lots. One drawing. Two seasons.

Organic lawn programs still need the crew to reach fixtures without walking through wet beds. Coordinate with organic lawn care so mow and trim routes do not knock stakes every week.

One dark lamp is plants. A dark zone is power.

Do not order a new system because shrubs covered three heads. Open the transformer first. Check the timer and any GFCI. Then prune for access and re-aim.
