In 2021, members of our Evanston community asked Greenwise to join the Wild Onion Market as an owner, and we said yes. This decision reflects our commitment to supporting sustainable, community-owned initiatives that align with our organic lawn care values.
Why We Became Owners
As an organic lawn care company, Greenwise believes in lightening our footprint by providing safe approaches to caring for lawns. It made sense that we would care about a community-owned grocery store that creates a safe, organic, and sustainable way to provide affordable food to our community.
Becoming an owner of the Wild Onion Food Co-op aligns with our values around organic practices, environmental responsibility, and supporting local, sustainable initiatives. This partnership reflects our commitment to these principles both in our business practices and in our community involvement.
Supporting Small Businesses
As a small business ourselves, Greenwise wants to support other small businesses. The Wild Onion Market provides a way for us all to lighten our footprint by creating a space for Illinois farmers and local producers to share their food.
Supporting the Wild Onion Food Co-op helps create opportunities for local farmers and producers while providing community members with access to organic, locally-sourced food. This model supports the local economy while promoting sustainable food systems.
Community-Owned Model
Cooperative ownership is a solution for individuals to create powerful social and economic change in their communities. At the co-op, all owners have equal access to voting for a Board of Directors, meaning more money does not mean more power. Store profits go back to the community, not to some out-of-town corporate headquarters.
The community-owned model of the Wild Onion Food Co-op means that we own it, we build it, and we benefit from it, right here where we live. This model aligns with our values around community engagement and local ownership.
Shared Values
The Wild Onion Food Co-op and Greenwise share values around organic practices, environmental responsibility, and community support. Both organizations are committed to creating safe, sustainable options for community members while supporting local economies.
Becoming an owner of the Wild Onion Food Co-op allows us to support these shared values in a tangible way while contributing to a community-owned initiative that benefits everyone.
Community Impact
Supporting the Wild Onion Food Co-op helps create access to organic, locally-sourced food for community members while supporting Illinois farmers and local producers. This creates positive impacts for both the local economy and community health.
Greenwise is proud to be an owner of the Wild Onion Food Co-op and to support this community-owned initiative that aligns with our values around organic practices, environmental responsibility, and community engagement.
