Becoming an Owner of the Wild Onion Food Co-op

In 2021, members of our Evanston community asked us to join the Wild Onion Market as an owner. We said yes!

Why? Because we are an organic lawn care company that believes in lightening our footprint by providing safe approaches to caring for your lawn. It makes sense we’d care about a community-owned grocery store that’s creating a safe, organic & sustainable way to provide affordable food to our community.

Plus, as a small business, we want to support other small businesses. The Wild Onion Market provides a way for us all to lighten our footprint by creating a space for our Illinois farmers and local producers to share their food.

Here’s some information from the Wild Onion Market website:

Why Community-Owned?

Cooperative ownership is a solution for individuals to create powerful social and economic change in their communities. At the co-op, all Owners have equal access to voting for a Board of Directors – more money doesn’t mean more power. Store profits go back to the community – not to some out-of-town corporate headquarters. And the best part is that we own it, we build it, and we benefit from it – right here where we live.

Why Grocery?

Wild Onion Market Owners are looking for a way to take control of their grocery experience. From supporting local farmers and producers with a year-round opportunity to sell goods, to providing access to food and products that are good for people and less impactful on our planet, the co-op will be an independent store with the flexibility to truly serve its customers.
