Why Are There Weeds in My Lawn? And How Do I Get Rid of Them Safely?

dandy2Weeds are one of the more vexing aspects of every lawn care program.

What they are and why they are in a lawn are the keys to how to prevent them. Weeds thrive on weak, stressed turf and compacted, unhealthy soil. Eliminate those conditions and grass will win over weeds.

Weeds are natural indicators, meaning their presence provides a clue to a larger problem occurring in the soil. Getting rid of the weeds with a toxic herbicide such as RoundUp masks the problem without solving the underlying issue.

Organics are a process, not a product. An organic lawn care program works best given the time to create a healthy soil environment in which grass can thrive and weeds won’t grow.

This process includes:

  • Balancing the nutrient content of the lawn in favor of the grass;
  • Reducing compaction by aerating in combination with a mineral soil builder;
  • Mowing at a high level (2.5″ to 3″) to encourage a dense, lush lawn capable crowding out of weeds;
  • Proactively seeding existing bare spots;
  • Overseeding the entire lawn as needed (normally once a year for a healthy lawn);
  • Using pre-emergent in the spring to prevent weed seeds from germinating;
  • Correcting drainage issues in the lawn;
  • Watering deeply and infrequently, maintain adequate soil moisture but do not over-water;
  • Using mulch in the garden beds and around tree rings.

When weeds do bloom, you don’t need to resort to toxic chemicals.

Instead, try these non-toxic solutions:

Manual weed pull.dandy1

We can send a team out to manually pull weeds, especially broadleaf weeds such as dandelions.  Admittedly this is very time consuming and can be costly. We recommend that every time you’re sitting in your yard playing with the kids and pets or having a cook-out, pull a visible weed or two — you’d be surprised at how quickly your yard will be free of weeds!

All-natural weed manager.  Extremely effective on broadleaf weeds, such as dandelions and broadleaf plantains. A foliar application rich in iron will over fertilize the weeds. Since grass is a heavy feeder it thrives on the extra fertilization.  Weeds, especially broadleaf weeds such as dandelions, cannot handle the extra fertilization and within hours of application the weeds die off. See below for more information on Greenwise’s All-Natural Weed Manager.

A Note on Undesirable Grasses. Weedy grasses, such as bentgrass, crabgrass and quackgrass, are more difficult to eradicate because they are very similar to turfgrass. There is not even an herbicide you can use that will not also kill the desirable lawn grasses. Normally, the solution is to cut out the turf containing the weedy grass and replacing it with sod or reseeding the area.

Greenwise All-Natural Weed Manager

We recommend two applications, one-to-two-weeks apart, in the Spring to eliminate many turf weeds. We will be running this service route throughout April and May.

Application: Liquid spray

Ingredients: All-natural chelated iron, water

Purpose: Greenwise all-natural weed manager works to actively rid the lawn of weeds rather than just prevent their growth.  The weed manager is highly rich in iron that serve to over-fertilize broadleaf weeds causing them to soon perish.  Grass is not harmed because grass is a heavy feeder and thrives on fertilization.  Within hours of application, you will notice black rings appearing on the foliage of weeds as they begin to perish.  Two applications are recommended for maximum effectiveness.

Homeowner Input: No lawn preparation is needed on your part.  You also do not need to conduct any special follow up.  The treatment starts soaking into the ground immediately; watering the day after application is beneficial but not necessary.

    It’s a cool idea to pull a few weeds whenever you have a barbecue, it sounds relaxing. That could work for me if I had barbecues but I am usually working. I want to win a reward for the best yard in the neighborhood so I am going to look for a weed control service.

    Thanks for mentioning how you should balance the nutrients your lawn gets to avoid weeds. It is important to understand what nutrients your lawn needs so you choose the best ones to add. As I see it, choosing a professional can help care for your lawn the best.
