The Design Process
The Design Process at Greenwise centers first and foremost on you.
We start with a phone call or email to discuss your interests, needs and challenges. We will set a time to meet that is convenient for all of us and allow the necessary time to thoroughly inventory the site conditions and needs of the property and review your interests. This meeting is typically scheduled for 1 hour however, we want to get the information we need to create a beautiful design and will always spend the time necessary to get it right and determine one of three paths that makes the most sense for you.
Descriptive Proposal (with or without a hand sketch): This path is typically taken when we are looking at a smaller project that does not require large hardscape elements or permitting. This is a highly descriptive proposal for the implementation of the design that may or may not include a hand rendered sketch. This will involve a second meeting to discuss the proposal and sketch and go over the design on site to visualize layout and expected outcomes.
Design Build Agreement: The most typical and most used path allows for multiple meetings and revisions to pinpoint an exact design solution for your property. This is a retained service with the entirety of that retainer applied to the final construction invoice. Walking this path with our designers includes a signed agreement for a constructed landscape to be built. This allows out design team to work with you to create a concept from which you can choose a specific area to concentrate on, or detail the entire drawing for implementation. This is the most flexible type of process allowing us to cater the retainer to the project and work through permitting, construction detailing and other needs as we determine mutually. Greenwise retains ownership of the design as we work through the design and construction phases of the project. Maintenance plans, service agreements for utilities and appliances installed and ongoing care are all available during and after completion of the project. As-built drawings are available as well once construction is complete.
Design Fee Agreement: This path culminates in a design for your property that you own and is typically reserved for larger scale master planning. We meet and assess the design challenges, offer a program of solutions and work through the design process to create a master plan with details as agreed upon. During this process we will create a drawing or drawing set that will allow you to have Greenwise or another company bid on the construction of the landscape. We will provide construction details, permit submission drawings and other documents as necessary. This path is a retained service and is billed with 50% of the retainer due upon execution of the agreement and the remaining billed upon completion. Certain needs are assessed for hourly billing beyond the scope of the agreement.
The Greenwise Design team is ready to work with you for all sizes of projects and can accommodate any needs you may have.
Step One: Initial Contact Whether by phone, email or onsite, we strive to begin the process with thoughtful understanding of your landscape needs. We begin by asking questions to understand what your goals are. You drive the process and we respond by listening to your concerns and begin to formulate a program that best fits your needs.
Step Two: Initial Consultation According to your schedule we meet at your home to discuss and see firsthand, your desires and needs. At this meeting we take a general inventory of site conditions and make suggestions where necessary. At this initial consultation we listen to your challenges and begin to work with you to shape the creative vision for your landscape.
Step Three: Design Development We take our notes, sketches and plans back to the office and begin to create a plan to fit your property’s specific needs. We look closely at the challenges and create an illustrative, artistic landscape plan. We consider the mechanics of hydrology, the science of horticulture and the artistic creation of design to bring you a thoughtful solution for your consideration coupled with a proposal for installation reflective of your budgetary input and the plan as presented.
Step Four: Design Revision Like all creative endeavors, landscape design is subject to critique. At Greenwise, we seek out and welcome your feedback. Our job as designers is to create a plan that meets your needs, responds to the unique conditions that exist on your site and fits with the context and architectural style of your home and your tastes. As needed, we are happy to revise a design and never force you to accept anything less than your expectations.
Step Five: Design Acceptance Once we have worked together to create the plan you desire, we proceed to create construction details (if necessary) and any other documents needed for permitting and other approvals. We also develop a program for installation whether by Greenwise or others, depending on the path we set out at the beginning of the process.
